Why is Taekwon-Do different from Karate?
First you must understand there are many styles of Taekwon-Do, just as there are many styles of Karate. Traditional, original Taekwon-Do is what will be learned in the program under the guidance of Mrs. Golino. The focus is specifically on the tenets and theory of power, both explained in the course description. Karate may be Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Okinowan, Korean, or other origin. Karate is a generic word, not unlike "jeans". There are many styles of Jeans. They all fit our bodies differently. Taekwon-Do was introduced to the United States in April 1955 by General Choi Hong Hi. It is a Korean art and is also one of the most modernized of all arts. Our stances are more upright, more comfortable and all techniques are based on science and physics.

How is ITF Taekwon-Do different from WTF?
There are many organizations that represent Taekwon-Do, there are many imitators as well who do not follow any standardized materials. These imitators do not belong to a larger governing body.

ITF is not a sport, it is a way of life. Although international competitions are held, ITF is not an Olympic sport. Only in traditional, original Taekwon-Do there are 3600 hand techniques and 1200 foot techniques. There are 24 patterns (also called tul's or forms) to learn. There are 24 to represent 24 hours in one day, one full day of General Choi's life devoted to original Taekwon-Do forever. The most similar style of ITF would be GTF (Global Taekwon-Do Federation). GTF practices the same materials as ITF, however, this federation lacks the evolutional changes that are incorporated year after within the ITF.

WTF (World Taekwon-Do) is a sport, and Olympic sport. One of the most noticeable differences between ITF and WTF is that in WTF, they practice and perfect a handful of techniques, whereas ITF has thousands. Also, WTF sparring (fighting) does not allow hand techniques to the head. ITF allows hand techniques to the head when sparring. WTF patterns differ greatly from ITF.

If I have a belt from another school, can I keep at the same level?
We ask that you enter a class on a trial basis without a belt at all. Therefore, an educated assessment of technique can be made without the pressure or expectations from others. A student entering an ITF program from a WTF program will have much to learn.

How long will it take for each promotion?
Promotions take place every two to three months. A longer time period is required once the student reaches the higher belts closer to black. Typically a black belt is earned over the course of 2 and one half years. However, all students are different and all students learn at different paces. Black belt test candidates of Mrs. Golino must perform 20 hours of community service, write a term paper, demonstrate all technical material from the test requirements manual and pass an oral exam.
